It all started in 1929, at the start of the great depression, during a time when it was difficult for the Norman F. Biery Farm to sell its milk to a bottler. The Biery family along with a group of local Ohio dairy farmers went together to create a co-op in order to market their milk in the form of Swiss cheese. The cheese was taken to be distributed at the farmers markets in Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. After the Great Depression ended, Norman started to buy Swiss cheese from the local Amish communities and Biery Cheese diversified into a cheese packaging and distribution company. This transformation allowed Biery Cheese to supply more than just one variety of cheese to its customers.
Biery was primarily a bulk deli supplier for many grocery chains in the midwest and northeast United States. In 1952, Harold Biery took over the company as president. In 1956, Biery Cheese started into the retail dairy case packaging, providing Biery branded and private label packaging in the form of chunks.
